DIY Homemade Dishwasher Detergent - Easy, Cheap, Works Great!

I was recently running out of dishwasher detergent and hadn't come across any great deals lately.  Not too long ago I made some more of our DIY laundry detergent (which I love!), so I thought I'd check out some recipes on Pinterest and see what I came up with for the dishwasher......and success!!

I've used it for about a month now to be sure it worked well before recommending it to you lovely readers, and I am loving it!!  It was so easy to make, and cheaper than store-bought detergent.  I got most of my inspiration from here and this is the recipe I used....

DIY Homemade Dishwashing Detergent
Simply mix these 4 ingredients and store in a container with a lid - done and done!  =)
To run a load, put 2 Tablespoons in the detergent compartment and add 3 drops of dish soap (like Dawn).

Also, add vinegar to your rinse agent/Jet-Dry dispenser.  *If you don't have a "rinse agent" compartment, you can just put about a 1/2 c. of vinegar into a small glass cup/bowl on your top shelf.

If you have hard water, you can double the citric acid.  The citric acid will sometimes cause it to clump, but I just left the container open and checked it every few days, breaking it up with a butter knife. After a week or so, it was fine and didn't clump anymore - YMMV.  I just give it a little shake now when I use it.

*I found the ingredients in Wal-Mart without a problem, but I included the links above to be able to buy them on Amazon in case you're not near a store, or just prefer it to show up on your doorstep.  =)

Rite Aid: Finish Quantum (Electrasol) Powerball Dishwasher Detergent deal - only .49¢!

Rite-Aid has unadvertised sales called "Rite Buy" and right now they have one on Finish Quantum Powerball (10pk) for $2.49!  You can pair a couple coupons with the sale to make it really cheap!

Finish (used to be Electrasol) is one of my favorite dishwasher detergents....and it seems like I find the best deals at Rite-Aid.  My cutie-patootie 2 year old just broke our DW, but I think I'll grab some with the hope that it will be replaced soon!  ;p

     {{Deal Scenario - Rite-Aid through 1/31/12)

*some stores unadvertised deals vary, but this one is worth looking for!

Cheap Electrasol ~ Meijer and Target

I had gotten used to getting free Electrasol dishwasher detergent from Rite-Aid. They were running the rebate often enough that I didn't really think about running out, and I was loving it! Unfortunately, that sad day came last week and I had to use another brand and was sorely disappointed!

But! This week Meijer has it on sale for $3, and Target has it for about that too I believe (please leave a comment if you know the price for sure!). In this past Sunday's paper (4/19) there was a coupon in the Smart Source insert for $2.50 off a package of Electrasol/Finish dishwasher detergent.

So, .50 cents this week!! My dishes rejoice!

Also, you can print $1/1 coupon HERE (it can't be used with the $2.50 coupon because they're both manufacturer's coupons, but it's still a good coupon - great to use when Rite-Aid, hopefully, offers it free after rebate again) =)

Even though dishes are still one of my least favorite things to do, I just came across this poem and thought it was a delightful perspective:
"Thank God for dirty dishes,
They have a tale to tell.
While other folks go hungry,
We’re eating very well.
With home and health and happiness,
We surely shouldn’t fuss.
For by this stack of evidence,
God’s been good to us."
